INTRODUCTION... Periodontology is the dental specialty which treats the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. The major cause of tooth loss is Periodontal Disease.

APPOINTMENTS... For your convenience, the doctor's office hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday and Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We do have an answering service available when the office is closed. Appointments can be made by calling (978)649-3058. If you cannot keep a scheduled appointment, a 48 hour notice is requested so that someone else may use your time. A broken or failed appointment fee is charged for cancellations and failed appointments. Reserved time is exclusively scheduled for you and failure to make scheduled appointments adds to the cost of dental care. It is not fair to good patients to ask them to pay for patients who have poor attendance. We therefore charge at a rate of $50.00 for a missed or cancelled visit and $75.00 for a doctor's surgical visit. We ask that you be considerate of our time and your fellow patients. Our office will make every effort to schedule you at a convenient time.

EMERGENCY CARE... We have a 24 hour paging service at (781)944-5258.

INSURANCE... As a service to you, our office will submit charges for services to your insurance company. However, we do consider the patient primarily responsible for the account. When payment of insurance claims is assigned to us, that portion of the fee payable by the patient is due at the time of service. In most cases we ask that a minimum of 25% be paid at the time of service. Our office manager will discuss specific financial arrangements with you. If you have had a recall visit within the prior six months, we request that payment in full be made at the time of visit.

Dr. Robert L. Mandell D.M.D., M.M.Sc. has been in periodontal practice since 1980. Dr. Mandell received his dental degree from the Boston University Goldman School of Dentistry. Following a family practice residency at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY and a fellowship at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA, Dr. Mandell earned a Research Fellowship in Periodontology and Oral Microbiology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Forsyth Research Center in Boston. Dr. Mandell won the 1980 Orban Prize competition for excellence in periodontal research awarded by the American Academy of Periodontology.

Dr. Mandell has held several teaching positions at well known dental institutions, including the Medical College of Virginia and later served as the Assistant Director of Emory School of Dentistry's Periodontal Research Center. Dr Mandell continued his research here in Massachussetts as a Staff Associate in the Periodontal Research Center at the Forsyth Dental Center. Dr. Mandell is currently staff periodontist at the Tufts Fernald dental facility.

Dr. Mandell has received government research grants to study juvenile periodontitis as well as the periodontal complications of smoking and diabetes. In 1992, Dr. Mandell was named to Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Dr. Mandell has published his work in many scientific journals including The Journal of Periodontology, Clinical Periodontology, Infection and Immunity, and The Journal of Dental Research.

Dr. Mandell became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in 1991. The American Board of Periodontolgy is the only certifying board in the dental specialty of Periodontics. A Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology is a periodontist who has made a significant achievement beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty. This certification is a voluntary effort in continuing education and is a testament to Dr. Mandell's ongoing professional development and committment to excellence.

In 1994, Dr. Mandell's research work on the role of smoking in periodontal disease was selected from all papers submitted to the Journal Periodontology to receive the Clinical Research Award.

Dr. Mandell is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, The American Dental Society, The Massachussets Dental and Periodontal Societies and The International Association of Dental Research.

In 1993, Dr. Mandell was appointed to the Massachussets Board of Registration in Dentistry to fulfill a 6 year term by Governor William Weld. The Board's mission is to protect the health, safety and dental welfare of the citizens of Massachussetts and to raise the standards of dental practice, ensure quality dental services and establish acceptable codes of ethical behavior in dental practice. Dr. Mandell served as Chairman of the Board in 1996.
